The Sunset Story

Let's Begin this saga with a statement about the following stories, that's what they are, stories, rumors, local folklore, yarns and gossips, all of them.  However, stories passed down through subsequent generations become believed, told again and embellished upon, until they reach mythical or seemingly factual status.

Seems to be in the mid 1800's, a European woman of royal lineage was cavorting and running around with a commoner and when discovered was ostracized by her family.  The two lovers fled their "old world" lives for a new start in Pennsylvania.  Ruppsville to be exact.

Sixty men dug the hole, filled it with stacked local stone, lining the walls three feet thick and six feet deep, thick wooden posts, wooden pegs and hand cut nails were used to build the Tavern and Coach stop, now called the Ruppsville Hotel.

Drafty windows, pot belly stoves, hearty fare, drinks, and rooms for lodging were all part of the hotel experience.

The picture at the top of this page appears to have been taken between 1880-1895 and many Innkeepers have lived and worked here.

There are rumors of Brothels, Speakeasies, Secret Trap Doors, Rooms to Hide in...  Oh yes, of course, and the Ghosts.  Doors do sometimes close by themselves,  voices have been heard emanating from the attic.  We have heard all of these things and know they may not be factual, but they are certainly interesting.

Currently the building houses the Sunset Grille, a casual and fun Restaurant.  Our place and yours...
